Madgane / Chana Dal Payasu

We GSB people [Amchigelle community] usher in the new year and celebrate springtime harvest season with Samsaar Padvo/Ugadi celebrations. Traditional home cooked food is an integral part of our celebrations and Samsaar padvo is no exception. The Ugadi menu mostly consists of Chano Kadgi Ghashi, Khotto, Chutney, Tendle bibbe upkari, Dalitoy, Madgane, etc. Though this traditional celebration while living overseas is desirable but not always practical, hence the festive menu gets adjusted depending upon the availability of ingredients and time. Whatever is the menu it does include Madgane as sweet dish. Today posting here the recipe of Madgane that has been lying in my drafts.

Doodhpak / Milk and Rice Pudding

There are variety of payasu made on auspicious occasions and festivals by the GSB/Konkani community. Few to name are Shevayin payasu, Rawe payasu, Gharayi, Madgane, Doodhpak, etc. I have already posted the recipe for Shevayin payasu and Rawe Payasu. Today I have got you the recipe for Doodhpak.

Doodhpak literally means milk sweet syrup. It is basically a delicious and aromatic concoction made by slowly simmering the milk with rice, sugar and cardamom powder to form a creamy rich treat packed with all dairy goodness. Few years back when I got an opportunity to make this sweet dish for a festival celebration here, one of my friend passed on this recipe to me.

Belgavi Kunda

I love most of our Indian sweet dishes and when I can re-create certain special sweets [that looks impossible to do] at home then its like icing on the cake!!! If you remember my excitement when I posted Dharwad pedhas last year, today I am equally excited to post the recipe of Belgavi/Belgaum Kunda, a famous sweet from Belgaum city in North Karnataka. The name itself is pure nostalgia and as suggested by my college friend it was Be-lagaam Kunda which means once you start eating it you cannot stop after one bowl... simply irresistible. I am sure who ever loves this sweet can relate to my feelings!

Dharwad Pedhas

Dharwad pedhas are one of the favourites amongst all the pedhas, sold only by the Thakurs sweet shop at Dharwad in Karnataka and the preparation technique is a family secret. The availability of this sweet is limited to very few shops across the country, so getting hold of them here in this region where I stay was next to impossible. That made me think if only I could replicate this sweet at home.

Eggless Non-Alcoholic Fruit Cake - Merry Christmas !

Christmas fruit cake is a 'must have' cake for holiday celebrations. It was always a wish to bake this cake but my understanding that the dry fruits which are integral part of it needs soaking in rum/ brandy, so till date I never made an attempt. Few days back I came across Cheryl's recipe on baking group. She had mentioned using non-alcoholic substitute for soaking fruits. That led me to hunt for other recipes which used non-alcoholic substitutes like apple juice, orange juice. I followed Cheryl's tip of using grape juice because as per her tips grape juice is good alternative to brandy. Below recipe is loosely adapted from here but before that you can check Cheryl's page for Christmas Fruit Cake - tips and more and then proceed with baking this cake instantly.

Rawa Undo/ Semolina Laddoos with Sugar Syrup

We were done with our annual vacation for this year and with schools reopening 10 days back, attending my cousin's [sister] marriage back in India was next to impossible. Though very excited on hearing this good news I was feeling sad that we will be missing it. All relatives were excited to meet once again during her wedding ceremony [after my son's thread ceremony function] and each one of them noting their plans to make it memorable for her and her family, filled with fun and joyous moments.

Physically we were miles away from the function venue but all my mind this time was imagining the loving atmosphere that gets created during different marriage rituals which brings in families and friends together. Sitting here I managed to give a ring and talk to few family members except my sis as she was in middle of prewedding rituals. After the phone call, opened the sweet box placed on dining table to find a lonely rawa laddoo staring at me. Picked and popped into mouth as shaadi ka laddoo [ had prepared some rawa laddoos few days back]

The below post is dedicated to my sweet lil sis, the soon to be beautiful bride in few hours time today. All our blessings and here's wishing the couple

"As you begin your life together
May each new day find your hearts a little closer
May you achieve the best that life can offer"

Wishing you both a lifetime of everlasting love and happiness !!!

Karathey Ambade Ghashi [Karathey Tikshe Godshe Amshe]

"Where are you?" ... "Missing ?" ... "Long time no see busy ?" ...  "No new posts, what happened?" ... aah friends I am feeling special and humbled by all the attention received from you. Thank you so much for all your kind words and messages. Now what had happened and why I was missing from here.

With series of events happening on personal front I opted to stay away from blogging and social media for some time. The vacation time was scheduled with two main events, firstly my elder son's thread ceremony. The function went well. After the function the next event in line was his participation at International Spell Bee competition so you see the whole focus was on him. Happy to share with my readers that he got selected as Budding Star at the competition among 97 students and received a trophy as well as cash prize in dollars.

After this event it was time for our return. Though we had scheduled our holidays to be little longer than previous ones but with these events it went by very quickly making it a memorable one. Post vacation after resuming routines at home and at work, I realized there was some imbalance and not able to finish my work in time. This made me step back and analyze what had caused it. Things at home were not in place and it dawned on me to opt for declutter lifestyle. As Barabara Hemphill has said " Clutter is nothing more than postponed delayed decisions". How true.. yes I have been postponing those decisions leading to a stressful routines, so decided to devote my blog time to sort and set things in order. Created space by becoming minimalist. Gave some of the toys , books to friends and other unused things were diverted to charity. I am happy I took the step and feeling happy and relaxed.

So friends what next? Am I done with this or still it will keep me away from blogging?
The answer is I am back to the space that is very dear to me ,,,  with a hope that it will not interfere in my clutter maintenance schedule [to stay organized] and this in turn gives me some time for blogging  ~ a virtuous cycle you see :). Probably you would see less posts but I won't keep myself away from posting recipes.  With many recipes lying in my draft for sometime now [the ones I had cooked before vacation], I decided why not publish them one by one.

So here is the recipe of curry 'Karathey Ambade Ghashi' from Konkani cuisine prepared with bittergourd and hogplums [ambado]

Wheat Jaggery Halwa/ Atte Ka Halwa

After the recipe of wheat flour dosas, I was reminded of  a sweet known as "Atte ka Halwa". I have prepared this sweet many times as its so quick and with simple steps it just gets done in 15 minutes. It was when "S" posted this dish on a food group about a year back, I tried it for the first time. The recipe she shared was inspired from Divine taste. This sweet dish, also known as Karha Prashad is prepared and served as prasad in langhar [ free community dining room, a feature of all Sikh temples] during gurudwara programs. Having said to be full of protein and rich in iron, this dish when prepared in ghee tastes so delicious that you will be tempted to go for 2nd and 3rd servings. I prepared this sweet once again on occasion of Holi today.

Chikki/Gajak and Happy Mahashivratri Wishes

After doing Sesame Groundnut Laddoos, I thought of doing chikki with the remaining reserve of kolhapuri jaggery. While searching for recipes, I came across this name "Gachak". Upon doing a bit of research I found out that it is called as "Gajak" [source wikipedia], a kind of chikki prepared in northern India from sesame seeds, to be consumed mostly in winter months. You can read more about it over here.

During my search for its recipe, I felt it is nothing but a recipe somewhat similar to chikki /nut brittle and the name was different depending on which part of India it came from. I decided to try them and prepared it adapting this recipe from here

Capsicum Panchamrut

Panchamrut and the name to my knowledge until now was only the one which was prepared and offered as neveidya during the puja time. It is a sweet mix/nectar prepared by mixing five ingredients and I just love it. To know what it is and how it is prepared you can read here.

Now when my sis, Suppiakka uttered about "Capsicum Panchamrut" I found the name very catchy, an unique dish there and got more curious to know what exactly the recipe was. Immediately I insisted her to share the dish recipe. Upon asking how did it taste, she said this is spicy, sweet and tangy dish that tastes awesome even without the use of onions and garlic. So friends below is my sis recipe. Believe me it tasted delicious and we relished it as side dish with chappatis.

Happy Makar Sankranti, Botnevri Kheeri - Guest Post 1

After displaying my collection of books here bought during my last trip, today I would like to mention about my recent and priceless addition to Konkani/ Amchi cuisine and that is "The Konkani Saraswat Cuisine" book. Though the FB page of the book mentioned its availability through Sapna Book House in Bangalore, I tried to meet the author, Mrs Asha Satish Philar and was lucky enough to get an autographed book from her. It was like dream come true meeting her, holding her hands, talking to her and the excitement got dugna when we [me and family] got to relish some delicious snacks and goodies prepared by aunty herself.
