The Day I Dream To Go To Space ~ Food Creation

Back from office when I entered the house, 'As' [my elder one] came running to me and began to recite a poem. I waited till he reached the last line and then was like, "ok another new poem for poetry recitation?"  He came with a pat reply "Amma, this is my poem" ... I was like @@@@ ! Speechless ...   ? His 8th birthday is few months away and how could he write a poem. But then being a voracious reader and one who easily gets absorbed in space science books, I had to believe him. He has always been captivated by space science, astronomy and never gets tired of talking about it. With increasing interest he has always imagined himself  "Fly me to the moon, let me swing among those stars" and now one of his dreams is to become an astronaut [U can see it in the drawing pic below]

I asked him to note it down immediately on a piece of paper and read those lines describing wonderful imagination of his mind [Had to guide him with sequencing of few words]. I felt so proud of him, I mean even at this age I won't be able to express myself in poetic form. Below is the poem for all of you to read [improvised with minimal help].

After I read his poem, I remembered a food creation of mine which I would like to post today. So no recipe here :). The creation is a DOSA served in an unique way based on space theme. I used normal dosa batter, carrot slices, tomato slices, sliced olives, capsicum, purple radish, pretzels, sprinkles, to prepare this "Dosa from space".

Cupcake Idlis

A twist to traditionally served idly chutney, here is another dish I prepared for bday celebration at home. When I saw them for the first time posted by a FB member on a food group, it was a visual treat and idlis never looked so appealing to me. Since then have been thinking and trying of recreating similar magic at home. After initial failed attempts, now I am happy that I managed to get them as you see in below pics, though chutney icing designs are still not upto the mark. I smeared the top of idlis with chutney and created designs using a fork. Hopefully with future attempts I should be able to do them perfectly with piping bags. We can use any other chutney such as tomato chutney, red chutney, roasted bell pepper chutney, mixture of hung curd and tomato sauce, chocolate sauce, chocolate glaze, etc as topping.

Food Creativity

Some of my food creations I did few months back.

Fruit salad with vanilla ice-cream

A creative dessert here with fruit salad and vanilla ice-cream. Fruits used are blueberries, black dried prunes, watermelon chunks, cherries, peaches, banana and green grapes.

I presented this dish based on theme of Olympics 2012 held in London. Olympics logo for basket ball sports made from banan slices, peach slice and prunes.
Olympic rings made from ice-cream cone baskets filled with respective colored fruits.

Vegetable Salad

Smoky eggplant, tomatoes, corn, black olives, grilled capsicum tossed in olive oil and drizzled with Italian dressing.

You can see the Olympic fever continued to present this dish too.
Logo for an archer and target prepared from bread slice, grated carrot, black olives, eggplant pieces, chopped tomato, corn kernel

Capsicum Cheese Carrot Sandwich

A slice of toasted bread with sauted capsicum onion mix and cheese, later topped with shredded carrot, black olives, tomato slice, and lemon wedge.
The above sandwich was designed to look like Mr. Clown.

Tomato  Carrot Soup

Ingredients used to prepare the above soup has been plated in a way to welcome the new beginning, new year 2013 amid chilly weather.

Hope you enjoyed above creations !!!

Note: I will be updating this space with more similar creations

Happy Creations!!!

Angry Bird Idlis

IDLIS disguised as angry birds that will fascinate our kids to eat them.

Myself, never played this game of angry birds and so wasn't aware of this character. "A" [elder son] neither played it but then he was aware of the character and used to get very excited as he saw them in pics/posters/ t shirts/ shoe designs ... I decided to find about them via google search. While browsing for their pics, I came across a cute creation of various angry bird characters made out of eggs.

I wanted to create something similar to surprise my son. I adapted the idea and created as per availability of the ingredients in my kitchen.

Idlis is what came to my mind to use for this creation in place of eggs.

Method:
Make idlis from idli batter.

Rest all is decoration. Four characters made from idlis
  • White idli,
  • Tomato sauce spread on 2nd one,
  • Green idli [added palak puree to give the green color]...U can also spread green chutney on idli instead of adding palak puree
  • Saffron milk spread on 4th one to give that yellow color.
Topped with olives, cheese slices, [used to make eyes and eyebrows], sliced olives and tomato slices [feathers], carrot pieces [for beaks] , grapes [ears].

Carrot sticks, swiss rolls [ u can use  waffles] green chutney have been used to give fence look on the plate.

14th November being celebrated as Children's day in India would take this opportunity to wish all the kids HAPPY CHILDREN'S DAY through this post

Never imagined that this preparation and presentation would give me so much praise and love from my friends and fellow members in food groups on Facebook. After getting n number of likes and appreciation my reaction was no different than my son ... EUPHORIC

Hope kids gonna love these idlis and attack them like hungry [not angry] birds from their plates. This idea would work like wonders for kids party. Servings portions will depend on the size of idlis and also no. of other snacks/goodies at the party.

Sending this post as an entry to "Kids Delight -Party Ideas" event hosted by Kalyani and event by Srivalli

See you soon in my next post,,, till then ...
Happy Cooking!
